1Samuel 14:6 And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.

NEW STUFF [past posts- verses below]
Johnathan- Saul’s son- has a great idea- he tells his armor bearer ‘Look- God is not limited- he can save by few- or many’.
What’s his plan?
God’s people were dejected- we read in a previous chapter that they were hiding in caves for heaven’s sake.
The philistines are ready for war- Saul- Johnathan’s father- has 600 men and they are holding down the fort.
But Jonathan tells his companion ‘let’s go- just the 2 of us- and we will reveal ourselves to the enemy. If they say ‘come up to us’ that will be the big sign- we will know that God has delivered these guys into our hands’.
Now- wait a minute.
You’re going by too many signs man!
I mean if just the 2 of them go up- against the army- and they say ‘come on’- that doesn’t seem like a sign to me?
At least not a sign of victory.
More like a sign that we might get killed!
But they go- they get ‘the sign’ and sure enough- John was right.
They kill about 20 of the enemy- and the rest of these uncircumcised rascals flee in terror!
Now- Saul is watching- with his 600 men- and they see the enemy in great confusion- I mean they were so scared they were actually killing each other to escape.
Saul says ‘hey- something’s going on in the enemy camp- check to see if any of our guys are missing’.
They do a count- and yup- John and his sidekick are gone.
Saul realizes it’s his boy- you know- he must have had this thing since he was a kid. The whole ‘I can take on the world’ type thing.
So Saul and his army join in- and they route the enemy.
But Saul is so determined to wipe them out- he places a vow on his men-
‘If anyone even stops to eat- before the battle is over- he will die!’
Not such a good order- if you ask me [or Johnathan].
So- as the battle rages- the bible says even the ground shook!
It might have been an earthquake- or just the trembling feet of the Philistines.
At one point- John enters the woods with his men- and he never heard  his father’s order- so- he sticks- well- a stick into some honey- puts it to his mouth- and eats.
All the other soldiers watch in fear- they know what Saul said.
They tell John ‘your dad said if we eat- before the job is done- we die man’!
John says- in so many words ‘what a stupid order that was- if my dad let you eat- you would have had the extra strength to finish the job’.
So- Saul gets word that someone broke his order- and he does a sort of biblical investigation [cast lots] and they find out the one who broke the rule- was the son of the king.
What does Saul do?
He says ‘John- you gonna die right now’.
The rest of the people speak up ‘No way Saul- God used your son today- to give us the victory- and we won’t stand for it’.
The voice of the people prevail- and John escapes the hatchet.
The word of a king- even when he goes bad- still stands.
In the Old Testament- it was like ‘God’s law’.
God anointed Saul- and his word did matter.
But we also read that the letter of the law kills- and the Spirit- intent- gives life.
Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. Cor.
Jesus said the Sabbath was made ‘for man’ and not man for the Sabbath.
Meaning God’s law was for the benefit of man- and his accusers were always tuning it around.
In the case of Saul- yes- he made the order- and he was actually being faithful to his word- by getting ready to kill his own son if need be.
But the voice of the community also had great wisdom in it- they- as a group- spoke truth as well.
In the church- God speaks thru leaders- but he also speaks thru the consensus of the body.
Jesus is the head of the church- the King of this new covenant community- and when he speaks by his Spirit thru his people- then it works out well.
But when ‘kings’ make decrees- without the heart of a shepherd- then yes- watch out.
Because it can kill you.

As I talk about Russia- and ‘WW3’- I want you to simply see that all the evidence- and our  history- seems to show they are not ‘bluffing’ or ‘doing a show of strength’ in their buildup of forces in Syria and along the European/Russian border.
Russia actually sees the US as a real threat.
Obama said the other day ‘they see us as a threat- we are not’.
In short- I think Obama believes this- but the facts are we have a history of siding with rebels in various countries- and for political theater- at times- we back up rebels in these countries- with both U.S. air power- and troops on the ground.
In Egypt- we sided with the overthrow of a longtime Ally- Hosni Mubarak.
He was an ally- and we sided with his ouster.
In Libya- Gadhafi was too somewhat of an ally- because his was the only country that willingly stopped trying to obtain Nukes.
We backed his murder- shown to all the world in a disgraceful manner- with our planes flying overhead.
And off course Iraq- ‘he must go- he has weapons of mass destruction’
Not too long after- he was hanging from a noose.
Now- Putin sees all this- and sees us building up forces in NATO countries right on his border [In violation of our word- we said we would never do this- we changed our mind].
A few years back there were ‘protesters’ in Moscow- 0ne of our ‘leaders’ [I think it was Hilary Clinton] said ‘maybe it’s time for him to go’.
Which means ‘we might fly over your country- bomb you- and back up the rebels’.
Yes- Putin sees our buildup along the NATO border as a threat- and he is right!
I just read an article on CNN about the buildup of Planes and surface to air missiles- by Russia- in Syria.
It’s only a matter of time before Assad and Putin say ‘U.S. - you are illegally flying bombing missions over Syria- we give you a week’s warning- stop’.
Now- if they warn us- what will we do?
I think we will indeed back down- because the ‘war’ over Syria is not only a violation of ‘international law ‘[Syria is a sovereign country whose leader was just again elected by the majority of the population].
Even our own congress believes Obama’s actions are also a violation of U.S. law- because he never got a vote from congress.
Putin is ready to engage in a real- hot- ground war with the U.S.
I heard one pundit say ‘he will never do that- we would destroy him’.
How?
Nukes?
I don’t think Putin would launch them first- but he has the capacity of doing so- the only other nation on earth with that capability.
So- I see Putin giving us an ultimatum to ‘get out’.
I see him willing to engage- shoot down our planes- etc.
And it’s obvious he’s preparing for a real war.
Iran recently threatened to block the strait of Hormuz- a key passage in the Persian Gulf.
China just blocked our ships from going to Hong Kong.
And that region of the world is going to move ahead  in a way they feel is in their best interest.
The reality is- our military has been engaging in ‘real war’ on the ground for some time now [Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria] and to the dismay of the watching world- we have actually lost territory to ISIS and the Taliban.
This has emboldened other nations.
So why would anyone think ‘Putin would never do it- we would destroy him’.
Once again- by what threat?
The old defense ‘mutually assured destruction’ meant we would both be afraid the other would launch Nukes- and therefore neither side would do it.
Ok- if that’s the reasoning- and Russia feels the threat  of our other actions [our sanctions against their economy- for doing in Ukraine- the very same thing we do- Putin is backing Russian Nationalists- who are in Ukraine. We back ‘rebels’ in countries that are not even on our continent. But we slapped Putin with crippling sanctions- and made lite of it in a national forum [Obama gave a speech and kind of mocked him].
And we think he will not actually say ‘U.S. - your action in Syria is a violation of international law’ [it is] and then engage in a hot war?
Of course he would- and I predict when the ultimatum is given- because of the lack of support in congress- we will indeed back down- or Russia will ‘go to war’.
See?
PAST POSTS-
(594)             . Let me cover some church history. I have had someone argue with me about the history of Islam. Not a Muslim, but a Christian who was saying ‘why do you say Islam started in the 7th century, it started around the 11th’. My answer was ‘Muhammad lived in the 7th century’. Not too hard to see this. So I thought I should cover some history. During the time of the rise of Islam, the Christian church was already dividing from east and west. After Constantine [4th century Roman emperor] consolidated the Roman Empire in the 4th century he set up the capital city of the eastern empire, Constantinople [named after him]. As time progressed the western church would take on the form of Roman Catholicism, the eastern [Constantinople area. Modern day Turkey-Istanbul] would be known as ‘Orthodox’. Though the official split of eastern and western [Catholic-Rome!] churches occurred in 1054 AD, yet the division started years before. The official split is called ‘the great schism’ of the 11th century; it would not be until 500 years later that the church would have her ‘reformation’. The official reason for this split was over a rather silly thing. For centuries the Catholic church had an expression that said ‘the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father’ than they included ‘he proceeds from the father and the Son’. Well the eastern brothers didn’t like Rome telling them what to believe and used this as the official reason to ‘have the schism’. To be honest the divisions were coming for years. After the Roman Empire consolidated under Constantine, he tried to strengthen the eastern territories of his empire and for centuries you had the struggle for which region would be the most influential. At first you had 5 major areas that were divided under 5 main Bishops. As time went on the argument would be ‘which bishop has the most say so’ and it was really a power struggle. Finally Rome said ‘the bishop of Rome is the FIRST AMONG EQUALS [a term that many in the Protestant strain of the discipling movement would later embrace] he holds Peters seat’ and this is really where the divisions started. Eventually Muhammad would rise and Islam would take control of the eastern capital. This later became the reason for the crusades. The Catholic church wanted to regain the territories that she lost in the east. The eastern churches are very much Catholic in many ways. They also hold to a view of Christianity that sees man being ‘joined’ with God and becoming pleasing to God thru Christ’s grace uniting with us and making us like him. A perfectly scriptural view, but a different emphasis from the strong intellectual power that you read about from the western fathers of the church. The Catholic church is noted for her social action in ways that the eastern church is not. So both of these communions have good things to bring to the table. The Orthodox [eastern] churches would not be affected by the major social and political upheavals that took place in the west. The Renaissance, the Reformation and the Enlightenment had major impacts on western Christianity, while not affecting the eastern church in the same way. During the 13th- 15th centuries you would have ‘pre reformers’ rise up in the western church. John Wycliffe, the great Catholic Priest who was at the center of learning in France would become known for his translating the scriptures into the common language. Then you have John Huss and John Knox [3 Johns, scripture says 3 fold cords are not easily broken!] who would have their own influence in western Christianity. At this time you had whole movements of believers who would be seen as neither ‘western or eastern’ but restorationist [the restoring of the early practices and beliefs of the church] Peter Waldo would be the Father of the Waldensians and in the 12th century you would have the Albigenses in the south of France. These groups would be looked upon as ‘cults’ [though the term was not used yet] by the traditional church. So you can see how the church has been growing and reforming ever since the first century. Even though we see many divisions that exist till this day, there are strides being made for unity. The eastern and western church are very close to‘re uniting’ once again. While I do not personally hold to the doctrine of the Pope being the occupier of Peter’s seat, I also see him as a Christian man who is striving for unity in Christ’s church. Some believe the whole attempt for outward unity is futile. The more ardent Protestants see it as ‘the one world church of the anti christ’ I reject that language out of hand. Well I hope you got something out of this short overview of world history [real short!].

[parts]
Part of the achievements of Constantine was his development of the eastern half of the Roman empire- whose capitol was named after him- Constantinople.

Over a period of years the early Roman church fought over whose bishop would have more influence- the bishop of Rome [Pope] or the bishop in the east.

Many bishops in the Catholic Church have disagreed over the influence of one bishop being greater than the others [the idea that all the bishops should have an equal voice at the church councils is called Collegiality].

This has caused splits within the Catholic Church thru the centuries [the last big one in the 19th century].

Eventually the early church split- and the Eastern Church separated from Rome.

The eastern empire [called Byzantium- the seat of the Eastern Orthodox Church] officially split in the year 1054.

Now- in church history we call this the Great Schism- even though the Protestant split which took place in the 16th century was greater in effect.

Okay- the Protestant reformers split over various issues- I have an entire study on the blog about this.

But the main issue became what we call justification by faith.

Over the centuries many good men- and average church goers- lost the main message of the New Testament- which was a message of being saved by the grace of God.

Many well meaning Christians were struggling to do penance in a way that sort of earned them their salvation thru works.

NOTE- It just so happened that I mentioned Istanbul Turkey- and Moscow on this teaching- a day or 2 before the recent events. I posted a short video yesterday about the downing of the Russian plane by Turkey. https://youtu.be/LLmMWnq8uQY
Brief overview- we [U.S.] are ‘in’ Syria because we are supposed to be fighting terrorists- and nations that support them. Russia is also in Syria to fight terrorists.
Russia is fighting all of them [including the ones that Turkey supports- and backs- also called ‘rebels’- some of these groups we too support- because even though they are similar to ISIS- yet we overlook it- because they are fighting Assad [strange- I know].
Now- Turkey is also a member of NATO- meaning we will ‘back them up- like one of our own’.
So- in our war against terror- we will also theoretically ‘go to war’ against any nation that threatens nations in the NATO alliance [meaning we will defend nations that support terrorism].
Ok- Turkey shoots down a Russian plane [in Syrian airspace- an act of war- which president Obama defended] because the Russians are also bombing the terrorists that Turkey supports.
They shot down a Russian plane because the Russians are killing terrorists [though the ones Turkey backs don’t have the title of ISIS].
Now- after the plane was shot down- the Russians sent in a rescue helicopter- which too was shot at- by ‘rebels’ on the ground [who were the terrorists Russia was bombing].
These so called rebels- shot at the helicopter- using U.S. weapons- provided to them- wit U.S. backing [in theory- we supplied the terrorists that killed the Russian rescue team].
Now- Russia is mad- and we are supposed to support Turkey- even if it means war- because Turkey shot down a Russian plane- who were targeting terrorists.
Utterly amazing to me.

VERSES-
1Samuel 14:1 Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.
1Samuel 14:2 And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people that were with him were about six hundred men;
1Samuel 14:3 And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD's priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.
1Samuel 14:4 And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines' garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.
1Samuel 14:5 The forefront of the one was situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah.
1Samuel 14:6 And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.
1Samuel 14:7 And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.
1Samuel 14:8 Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.
1Samuel 14:9 If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.
1Samuel 14:10 But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.
1Samuel 14:11 And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.
1Samuel 14:12 And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.
1Samuel 14:13 And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armourbearer slew after him.
1Samuel 14:14 And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.
1Samuel 14:15 And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling.
1Samuel 14:16 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.
1Samuel 14:17 Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.
1Samuel 14:18 And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.
1Samuel 14:19 And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.
1Samuel 14:20 And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.
1Samuel 14:21 Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.
1Samuel 14:22 Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.
1Samuel 14:23 So the LORD saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Bethaven.
1Samuel 14:24 And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.
1Samuel 14:25 And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground.
1Samuel 14:26 And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.
1Samuel 14:27 But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.
1Samuel 14:28 Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint.
1Samuel 14:29 Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.
1Samuel 14:30 How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?
1Samuel 14:31 And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were very faint.
1Samuel 14:32 And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.
1Samuel 14:33 Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.
1Samuel 14:34 And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.
1Samuel 14:35 And Saul built an altar unto the LORD: the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.
1Samuel 14:36 And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.
1Samuel 14:37 And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.
1Samuel 14:38 And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.
1Samuel 14:39 For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.
1Samuel 14:40 Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.
1Samuel 14:41 Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.
1Samuel 14:42 And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.
1Samuel 14:43 Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.
1Samuel 14:44 And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.
1Samuel 14:45 And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.
1Samuel 14:46 Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.
1Samuel 14:47 So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them.
1Samuel 14:48 And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.
1Samuel 14:49 Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchishua: and the names of his two daughters were these; the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal:
1Samuel 14:50 And the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz: and the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul's uncle.
1Samuel 14:51 And Kish was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.
1Samuel 14:52 And there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.
12 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn and to eat.
But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.
But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;
How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?
Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?
But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.
But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.
