David is told by Achish that the other Lords of the Philistines
do not trust him to go to battle against Israel- they even say ‘this would be
the chance for him to reconcile with Saul’.
1Samuel
29:3 Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And
Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant
of Saul the king of Israel, which hath been with me these days, or these years,
and I have found no fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day?1Samuel 29:4 And the princes of the Philistines were wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an adversary to us: for wherewith should he reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men?
I think they were right.
So Achish defends David and says ‘I find no fault in him’-
this is a type/picture of Pilate’s guiltless proclamation over Jesus.
1Samuel
29:6 Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the LORD liveth,
thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host
is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy
coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favour thee not.1Samuel 29:7 Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines.
1Samuel 29:8 And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?
1Samuel 29:9 And Achish answered and said to David, I know that thou art good in my sight, as an angel of God: notwithstanding the princes of the Philistines have said, He shall not go up with us to the battle.
Pilate
saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again
unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at
all.
Pilate
therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to
you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.
When
the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying,
Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him:
for I find no fault in him.
Though Achish defends David- yet there was fault in David-
he was secretly fighting the enemies of Israel all along- and actually deceived
Achish.
So David takes the 3 day journey back home- to Ziklag.
As he arrives he sees that the enemies have raided his city-
took [or killed?] all the women and children- and there was nothing left!
David’s men are thinking of killing him at this point- and
he seeks God.
1Samuel
30:1 And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the
third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten
Ziklag, and burned it with fire;1Samuel 30:2 And had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way.
1Samuel 30:3 So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.
1Samuel 30:4 Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep.
The writer of the chapter- is telling the story after it happened- so he tells us that the women and kids were taken captive- but David- real time- does not seem to know this yet.
After all- he just got back to Ziklag- and the place was wiped out.
I want you to see it from the perspective of David- and his men- thinking it possible that all their families were killed.
The chapter does tell us that his men wanted to stone [kill] him.
Not a smart thing to do to your commander in chief- especially if you think the families are still alive- and you need to go get them.
But- at this point- David seeks God- and God tells him he will ‘recover all’.
David had to depend on this simple word from God- to encourage himself that ‘all was not lost’.
He asks the Lord if he should go and pursue the enemy- God
says ‘yes- and you will recover all’.
1Samuel
30:6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him,
because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for
his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.1Samuel 30:7 And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech's son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David.
1Samuel 30:8 And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.
David pursues the enemy- but he left 200 of his men behind
at the brook- they were too tired.
1Samuel
30:9 So David went, he and the six hundred men that were with him, and came to
the brook Besor, where those that were left behind stayed.1Samuel 30:10 But David pursued, he and four hundred men: for two hundred abode behind, which were so faint that they could not go over the brook Besor.
David and the other 400 [he still has a 600 man army] go after
the enemy- defeat them- and recover all that they lost- and more.
On the way back to camp- David was willing to give of the
spoils to the men that stayed behind.
But the other 400- saw themselves ‘more worthy’ because they
actually fought- and they did to want to give of the extra spoils to those who
stayed behind.
1Samuel
30:18 And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away: and David
rescued his two wives.1Samuel 30:19 And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all.
1Samuel 30:20 And David took all the flocks and the herds, which they drave before those other cattle, and said, This is David's spoil.
1Samuel 30:21 And David came to the two hundred men, which were so faint that they could not follow David, whom they had made also to abide at the brook Besor: and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him: and when David came near to the people, he saluted them.
1Samuel 30:22 Then answered all the wicked men and men of Belial, of those that went with David, and said, Because they went not with us, we will not give them ought of the spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.
David rebukes his men and tells then all that they gained-
was given to them of the Lord.
1Samuel
30:23 Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the
LORD hath given us, who hath preserved us, and delivered the company that came
against us into our hand.
They should not see their great victory as ‘theirs alone’.
And David makes a decree- that from now on- those who 'stay
behind’ or are deemed ‘less worthy’
still will benefit from all the blessings of the riches gained in battle.
1Samuel
30:24 For who will hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that
goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they
shall part alike.1Samuel 30:25 And it was so from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel unto this day.
A type of Christ indeed.
In many of the parables Jesus deals with the jealousy of
Israel- at the time of Christ- in that they felt their identity -in God- their history-
made them ‘more worthy’ then the Gentile ‘dogs’ around them.
20 For the
kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early
in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.
2 And
when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his
vineyard.
3 And he
went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
4 And
said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will
give you. And they went their way.
5 Again
he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.
6 And
about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith
unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?
7 They
say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into
the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.
8 So when
even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the
labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.
9 And
when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man
a penny.
10 But
when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and
they likewise received every man a penny.
11 And
when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,
12 Saying,
These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us,
which have borne the burden and heat of the day.
13 But he
answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou
agree with me for a penny?
14 Take
that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.
15 Is it
not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I
am good?
16 So the
last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.
They were offended when Jesus opened up the door of grace to
the other non-Jewish nations.
The Jews of Jesus day were saying ‘wait a minute Jesus-
these other nations did not go on the same long journey that we have been on-
we are the heirs of God- and the prophets- we worked longer than they did!’
Yet- Jesus opened up the door of the riches of grace to all-
even to those who were ‘left behind’.
11 Wherefore
remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called
Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by
hands;
12 That at
that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel,
and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in
the world:
13 But now
in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of
Christ.
At the end of the chapter David recovers all- he had a very
bad day at the start- and yet God turned it around-
And when we do the rest of the story- we will see how after
great disappointments- times when your own men want to kill you- times when you
thought all was lost.
That God will turn it around- and in the end- David will
indeed sit on the throne- that he was destined for from the start.

shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more
than meat, and the body than raiment?

27 Which of
you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began

elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard

called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant.
27 And he
said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf,
because he hath received him safe and sound.
28 And he
was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated
him.
29 And he
answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither
transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid,
that I might make merry with my friends:
30 But as
soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots,
thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.
31 And he
said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.
32 It was
meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and
is alive again; and was lost, and is found.
Luke
7 But unto
every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
8 Wherefore
he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts
