  SAMUEL 16-
1Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

 NEW-
God tells the prophet [Samuel] to go to the city of Bethlehem and anoint the next king.
Bethlehem is significant- Christ will be born there- who is called ‘the Son of David’.
The prophet spoke of him before-
But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.  Micah.
Samuel goes and calls a man by the name of Jesse.
God showed Samuel that the next king will be one of this man’s sons [he has 8].
So- Jesse has his boys pass by Samuel- one at a time.
Yet- after the 7 boys go by- God did not tell Samuel ‘he’s the one’.
So Samuel asks Jesse ‘do you have any more kids’?
Yup-
But he’s the youngest- and after all- well- he’s out taking care of the sheep.
What!
I think Jesse never thought that a shepherd boy would make the grade- for a king!
So David is called from ‘pastoring’ the flock- and sure enough he’s the one.
Samuel anoints him with the oil- and that very day the anointing left king Saul.
Now- the elders of Bethlehem knew what was going on- I mean it sort of feels like a coup- you know ‘he’s really the next king’ type thing.
But yet Saul is still officially in charge.
Now- I think it’s possible that some of Saul’s inner circle knew the scoop.
Because when the Spirit of God left Saul- he went into these ‘bi-polar’ episodes [for real- though they called it something else].
And his advisers says ‘Saul, how bout we find someone who can play the harp- and when you go into your fits- he will play- and you will feel better’.
Saul says it’s a good idea.
Now- this is where I think we need to see more into the dynamic.
Because one of Saul’s men says ‘hey- I know some musician- he’s also a great warrior [huh?] and maybe he can fit the bill’.
I think this guy knew that David was going to be the next king- though Saul is still in the dark.
Often times leaders- Pastors- they have an inner circle- and many times they know what’s going on ‘geez- pastor has some real problems- we all know it- but he might not realize it himself’.
And sometimes the inner circle might try and do the right thing- like in Saul’s case it’s possible the guy who recommends David-
Yes- that’s who he was speaking of- knew he was going to be the next king.
And instead of an all-out war- coup- maybe he recommended David thinking it would be better for Saul to be a sort of mentor to David.
Because David is no way a great warrior with a reputation- at this point.
Yet Saul’s adviser referred to him that way.
How could he know?
They knew what the kingly anointing meant- they saw the process play out in Saul’s life.
And it’s possible that the recommendation of a shepherd boy- had more to it than meets the eye.
He possibly heard about David being anointed already- and yes- he ‘was’ a great warrior- yet in the making.
So- David now enters the drama- some of the people already know what’s going on.
But they also see Saul as a man on the decline.
When rulers- leaders- even men who God used.
When they begin to go downhill- jealousy often rears its head.
They look upon others around them with suspicion-
They feel their own identity being challenged.
I find it significant that God chose a shepherd from Bethlehem- to be the king ‘after God's own heart’.
We saw this in the gospel of John- Jesus was the good Shepherd.
I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.  John 10.
And we will also see a type of Herod to come.
He was the king at the time of Jesus- when he was born.
And King Saul will eventually go after the shepherd boy- from Bethlehem-
With the same vengeance that Herod uses- when he kills all the kids from 2 years old and under- to get rid of the competition.
In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.  Matt. 2:18
David gets the job- he becomes Saul’s music man.
But Saul is a man of great importance- these types of men often overlook the ‘underlings’ below them.
They don’t always recognize the gifted people on their team-
Until they have a chance to prove themselves- on a large scale.
As the story continues- we will see a ‘huge’ threat rise up [about 9 feet 9 inches] against God’s chosen ones-
And there will be a young man- who will arise to the occasion.
Saul will ask ‘who is this guy’?
And he will be surprised to find out that he- well this man who will save the day- is the same young boy who played the harp- and also had this hidden talent of slinging some stones.
But that story will have to wait till the next chapter.

SAMUEL REVIEW
I’ve been commenting on the book of Samuel- brief overview.
Samuel is born at a time in Israel’s history where ‘the word of the Lord was rare- no open vision’.
God had stopped communicating to his people- because they were lukewarm- not serious about God.
God was looking for at least one passionate person- to cry out to him with all their heart.
He found that person in Hannah.
She was barren- could not get pregnant- and one day her desperate plea came to God.
‘Give me a child- and I’ll dedicate him to you’.
This might have ‘surprised’ God [I know- not really] because that type of desperation was missing from his people.
So- she has a son- Samuel- and she drops him off at the church one day [the tabernacle] and leaves him for good.
He’s raised under the leadership of Eli- and his 2 sons- who were priests.
These sons were using ‘their religion’ for personal benefit- they were wicked and sleeping around- and Eli knew this was going on- and didn’t stop it.
Yet- Eli has this woman [Hannah] who left her son- so he could ‘live for God’.
I’m sure Eli must have felt guilty ‘geez- this lady is living in the past- when people really did sell out to God’
And his own boys- were using religion as a scam.
One day [Samuel chapter 3] the young boy hears someone calling  him.
Samuel gets up and thinks it’s Eli- he goes to Eli ‘what do you want- I heard you call my name’.
Eli has no idea what Samuel is saying- and tells him to go to bed.
It happens 2 more times- and Eli realizes ‘Maybe God is calling the boy’.
He gives Samuel instructions to go lay down- and when he hears the voice again- to say ‘Speak God- I’m hear’.
Sure enough it does happen again- and God gives Samuel a message.
He tells Eli what God said- and the news was not good.
God will judge the wicked priests- Eli’s 2 sons- and God will clean house.
Ok- that’s it in brief.
I mention on the video how God revealed himself to Samuel thru his voice- and I have been teaching about the Logos recently.
God’s word comes first- then the ‘flesh’ the actual outworking of what he wants to do-
VERSES-
1Samuel 16:1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
1Samuel 16:2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.
1Samuel 16:3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
1Samuel 16:4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
1Samuel 16:5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
1Samuel 16:6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD's anointed is before him.
1Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
1Samuel 16:8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
1Samuel 16:9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
1Samuel 16:10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.
1Samuel 16:11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
1Samuel 16:12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
1Samuel 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
1Samuel 16:14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.
1Samuel 16:15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
1Samuel 16:16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
1Samuel 16:17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
1Samuel 16:18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.
1Samuel 16:19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.
1Samuel 16:20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.
1Samuel 16:21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
1Samuel 16:22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
1Samuel 16:23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither castye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.  Matt 7:6
This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
Tim 3.
